6 Things You Learn in Flight School That No One Told You About

Education & Development Blog

If your idea of flight school include visions of the Blue Angels and the movie "Top Gun", you would only be seeing half of the picture. In fact, there are many more aspects to flying that you learn in aviation college that no one tells you about.

Federal Aviation Requirements

Before you race to get up there, you need to know the Federal Aviation Administration's rules and requirements for pilots and aircraft. The FAA is the main governing body for all aspects of aviation. You will be tested on this knowledge and will use it on a daily basis once you graduate.

Engine Components

While you signed up for flight training, you will take classes in aircraft maintenance. This includes having a working knowledge of a plane's engine, wing flaps, fuel system, and electrical system. You need to understand enough of a plane's components to read the maintenance reports and be able to communicate effectively with the mechanics.

The Physics of Flight

While aviation schools do not issue degrees in science, you will need to understand the physics of flying. Having basic knowledge of the 'how' helps a good pilot understand the 'why'. This includes higher math and applied physics so that you understand lift and how it works.

Weather Forecasting

Everyone learns basic meteorology in 2nd grade. When you apply to aviation colleges in your area, however, you might want to study the weather in depth. A pilot must be able to accurately interpret cloud formations, air masses, and fronts as well as understand changes in temperature, humidity, and wind speed. Weather can wreck havoc on a flight. A well-trained pilot knows how safely read and maneuver through changing weather patterns.

Physical Fitness

Pilots must be physically fit. The FAA mandates not only good eyesight, but also a high level of general fitness. Your studies often include ways to stay healthy and fit as well as medicine or the effects of flying on your health.

Business Management

Even if you just want to fly for a major carrier, many aviation colleges have students take coursework in business management. The goal is to have well-rounded students who not only know how to fly, but also understand how the business side of flying works. This is beneficial education to have and can be used to further your career at a later point in time.

Aviation colleges not only teach you how to fly, but they also help you to become a sensible and informed pilot.

Developing A Strong Education

When I started college, I was laser focused on finishing my degree. I didn't care much about what I graduated in, as long as I finished soon. Unfortunately, that attitude really caused problems later when I realized that I had spent a lot of money on a degree that didn't matter. I had to go back to school and find my passion in order to really flourish. Also, I had to take deeper, more advanced classes to develop the kind of strong education I really wanted. This blog is all about learning how to learn, because the art of being good at school doesn't come naturally to everyone.
